Common Cosmetic Dental Problems

Some people are troubled by one problem tooth; others by a mouthful of less-than-perfect teeth. At Baystate Dental our cosmetic dentists are equipped with knowledge, hands-on training and state-of-the-art dental technology to tackle any dental problem you have and to get you smiling again. If you are tired of hiding your teeth when you smile, laugh, speak or eat, now is the time to explore cosmetic dental options.

Gaps in Your Smile

Do you have a gap between your two upper front teeth? You may feel that it detracts from the beauty of your smile. A small gap is easily filled with dental bonding, and porcelain veneers can correct larger gaps. Porcelain veneers meet in the middle and cover the gap.

Yellowed, Stained or Darkened Teeth

Discoloration is one of the most common and easily corrected cosmetic problems. Strongly pigmented foods and drinks can stain teeth over time. Aging also causes tooth enamel to become thinner which allows the yellow dentin layer to become more visible. Some medications or diseases can also discolor your teeth.

Whatever the reason for your tooth discoloration, professional tooth whitening done in our office or at home with custom-made whitening trays and professional-strength whitening gels can bring back your pearly whites in less time than you might expect.

A Gummy Smile

Sometimes teeth look too small or too short when gum tissue covers too much of the surface. In a gum recontouring procedure, our soft tissue laser can quickly and safely remove unwanted tissue to reveal the rest of your natural tooth structure and transform your smile.

Black Lines Along Your Crowns

You may have white porcelain crowns rather than gold crowns, but they may have a metal lining. As the years pass and the gums recede a little, the edge of the metal is exposed and creates a black streak along the gumline. This problem is best corrected by replacing the crown with an all-porcelain crown with a white ceramic lining.

Please see How Dental Crowns Are Made for more details.

Chipped Teeth

If a small chip has not exposed the tooth’s interior, but just mars the tooth’s enamel, it is easily repaired with dental bonding. If you have any other small defects besides a chip or two, they can all be repaired at once with porcelain veneers.

Missing Teeth

If you have lost any teeth, it is important to fill the gaps, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because your remaining teeth can begin to shift and throw your bite out of alignment. Dental implants anchor replacement teeth for a permanent correction when teeth have been lost. They can hold a bridge or an individual tooth, and several can hold multiple teeth.
