Do you think very often about your teeth? Perhaps when it is time to brush them morning and night, but probably not many other times. We tend to take it for granted that we have a mouthful of teeth that function properly – until something goes wrong. Unfortunately, dental problems do not always happen during our regular office hours, which is why we offer emergency dental care at Baystate Dental.

We have general, cosmetic and neuromuscular dentists, some of whom are on call 24-hours a day for emergency care and treatment. Our offices are open seven days a week (Sundays for emergencies only), with extended hours from 7 am to 8 pm on certain days.

Types of Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies often occur during evenings or weekends when people typically play sports. Delaying your dental care when you have developing problems, such as cavities, can also lead to painful emergency situations. Some of the dental emergencies we encounter are:

• Knocked out tooth
• Chipped or broken tooth
• Toothache
• Damage to dental bridge, dental crown or porcelain veneer
• Lost filling
• Problems with wires, brackets or bands on braces
• Tooth abscess (infection)
• Objects stuck between teeth
• Cut or bitten tongue, lip or cheek

Ways to Avoid Dental Emergencies

Not all dental emergencies are avoidable. However, there are certain safety measures you can take to keep your teeth healthy:

• Wear a protective mouthguard during sports
• Do not chew on ice or hard objects like pens and pencils
• Do not bite your fingernails
• Do not use your teeth as opening or cutting devices
• See your dentist regularly for professional dental cleanings and dental evaluations
• Practice good oral hygiene every day
