Questions For Your Orthodontist

Springfield, Holyoke, Longmeadow, and Wilbraham, MA Orthodontist

What orthodontic treatment options are available?

What works well for one patient may be inadequate for another. A full dental evaluation of your teeth and bite helps our orthodontists identify your problem areas so we can tailor a treatment program to meet your needs.

Some popular options include:

  • Traditional metal braces, which are periodically tightened to gently shift the teeth
  • Clear braces, which use clear brackets instead of metal ones
  • Invisalign©, which uses a series of clear plastic aligners
  • Retainers, which are removable appliances
  • Head gear, which use brackets but has a metal portion that extends outside of the mouth

How can I make metal braces more fun?

You can completely personalize the look of your metal braces by using different colored brackets on each tooth. There is a huge palate of colors to choose from, and you can make your selection based on any criteria:

  • School colors
  • Your favorite color
  • Rainbow colors
  • Your personal style

Do orthodontic treatments hurt?

Each patient has a different threshold for discomfort, so there is no one answer to this question. Braces that incorporate a metal wire for tightening can be uncomfortable, especially in the days following an adjustment. Invisalign avoids metal wires and uses plastic aligners which are typically more comfortable than metal brackets and wires.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Your length of orthodontic treatment will depend on the severity of your dental issues. Your orthodontist will discuss this in detail when devising your treatment plan. Metal braces are typically worn for one to two years, and Invisalign is typically used for one year if worn properly.

Are braces only for kids?

No. Braces can be effective for teenagers and adults. Many adults are hesitant about getting metal braces because it may impact their personal or professional lives, so Invisalign has become more popular for adults.

Orthodontists have had extensive dental training beyond dental school to properly provide these treatments. If you are considering an orthodontic treatment, make sure the dentist you choose has the training and expertise to correct your tooth alignment and bite.
