Do you sometimes feel embarrassed about your teeth when you speak, laugh or smile? If you find yourself hiding your smile, cosmetic dentistry has many potential solutions for you.

Tooth bonding, also called dental bonding, can correct teeth that are:

  • Discolored
  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Fractured
  • Broken
  • Crooked

A form of the same material used for dental bonding is also used for white fillings.

How Tooth Bonding Corrects Dental Problems

Your cosmetic dentist applies a tooth-colored, putty-like composite to the tooth incrementally. It is built up and molded to the perfect size and shape your tooth needs. This is a type of “direct restoration”, meaning that it is done directly on your tooth. There are also “indirect restorations” such as porcelain veneers or porcelain inlays and onlays that are made in a lab and then placed in or on the tooth.

An appropriate color of composite resin will be used so the restored tooth will look like the rest of your teeth.

Steps in Tooth Bonding

Once you and your cosmetic dentist have determined that dental bonding is the right choice, your dentist will prepare the tooth by giving it a slightly rough surface. This will allow a stronger connection with the bonding material.

He or she applies the bonding a little at a time, shaping and smoothing it to fit with the line of teeth and your bite. A curing light is used for a few seconds to harden the bonding. Then any excess is trimmed away and the tooth is polished to a natural-looking shine. You will leave the office with your dental problem just a memory.
